From day one in these waning hours of Black History Month, 2022, there is a fact that is self-evident. The descendants of slavery, the most horrific act of man’s inhumanity to man, are not just survivors of the USA’s great sin, we are overcomers! Yes, it’s true, people of color survived slavery and all of its ugliness. Slavery spawn the racism that is so prevalent in our society today. However, in spite of all the negative experiences borne out of slavery, we are overcomers. Hear what the word of God says: “I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known Him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one” (1 John 2:14).
As a people, we are strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might (Eph. 6:10). God is the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, and he is also the God of Lutisha, and the God of Mattie Pearl, and the God of Amos. For the descendants of Ham, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. God is in the midst of her; She shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early. The Lord of host is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. (Psalm 46:1-3, 5, 7)
Let us continue.
