A big “God Bless You” goes out to the Deacons and Trustees for their excellent Deacons and Trustees Affirmation Day. As we celebrated with these devoted and conscientious men, there was the underlying concept of Servant-Leaders. (Capitalization for emphasis). The leadership in the Lord’s Church is the exact opposite of that in the world’s system. Leaders in the church are the Servants to the Body. There is no “I am the boss”. There is the modeling of the our Lord’s leadership style spoken of by Him, found in Matthew 20:28: “For even I, the Son of Man, came here not to be served but to serve others, and to give my life as a ransom for many” (NLT). Jesus had told His disciples that the leaders of the world’s system were tyrants and autocratic despots, but not His followers. It is here that Jesus introduces the concept of servant-leaders. “Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must become your slave” (Matt. 20:26, 27).
On last Sunday the Deacons and Trustees affirmed their servanthood and again let the membership respect the leadership that is found in their servanthood. We praise God for our Servant-Leaders.
